A New Direction for a New Year

Welcome to the new Petra Karthaus blog. In the past, we’ve used this space to
share pictures of our new lines and let customers know of any upcoming sales. We’ll still be doing that, but we’ve moved those kinds of announcements over to our social media channels:

  • We’ve just launched an Instagram page Instagram where we’ll regularly be showcasing our lines, many of which are exclusive to our store.
  • And you can follow us on Facebook where you can find great pictures, store info and occasional contests.

As for the blog, we’ll be using it to give you an inside look at what it takes to collect and curate the looks that make Petra Karthaus what it is, and why many  of our customers have been with us for over 25 years.

We find that we have these conversations fairly regularly. People come in to look around and make their way to the lounge in the back of the store where we answer their questions about everything from what a buying trip to Europe is like to how we choose which designers to showcase. It’s that extra attention that first-time visitors and long-time clients appreciate, and on this blog, our goal is to recreate that.

We’re just putting the finishing touches on our upcoming trip to Europe to get ready for fall/winter 2016, which we’ll be sharing highlights of in our next post. We’ll tell you about the shows we attend and any surprises we find along the way.

In the meantime, do come by for a visit to see what we have in stock for spring 2016. Below are a few of our favourites. And don't forget to check out the feature piece on the Manulife Centre blog about “The Heist,” the latest piece of art hanging in the store.

Until next time!

Timeless, Glamorous - Caroline Biss

Paris à la Mode

The thousands of " Cadenas D'amour" or love locks have been removed from the Pont des Arts.  There were so many that there were fears the bridge would collapse - but when it comes to fashion in Paris, the subject is still very much romance.

Just arriving at PK, the sweetheart necklines and swooning styles by Caroline Biss. We really love the colours of this Fall: coral, royal blue and navy, the pearl greys, creams and beiges in the surprising beauty of their collection.

For me, the designer has to begin with a strong female image guiding and influencing the creative process all along!

Caroline Biss now at PK, come and feel the inspiration......

Pin It Down to Perfection!

You know what Antoine de Saint-Exupéry says: “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

We know Monsieur Saint-Exupéry wasn't talking about clothes (and certainly not that perfection is good), but we find this a perfect way to explain the importance of a good fit!

Recently, the Duchess of Cambridge was featured in a quite interesting article in The Telegraph. The Secret of the Duchess' elegantly tailored style? Alterations!

Sometimes even the most quintessential piece isn't perfect enough; everyone is built differently and not even the exquisite Duchess can wear anything off a hanger. An outfit can change from good to extraordinary with just a few pins in the right place, and this is why we pride ourselves in working with the best dressmakers in the city just so we're sure that our clients always have the most elegant and perfect fit.

It's a wrap!

Actually, it's a scarf! Lots of them!

What better to compliment any look than a beautiful scarf? At Petra Karthaus we have a great variety, from beautiful silk designs from Italy to chic prints from Austria, Germany and France, we're sure to have the perfect one for your outfit.

DID YOU KNOW?

One of the first origins of the scarf is in Ancient Rome, where it was used to keep clean rather than warm. It was called the sudarium, which translates from Latin to English as "sweat cloth", and was used to wipe the sweat from the neck and face in hot weather. They were originally worn by men around their neck or tied to their belt.
Soon women started using the scarves, which were made of cloth and not made of wool, pashmina, or silk, and ever since the scarf has been fashionable among women. And, by the middle of the 20th century scarves became one of the most essential and versatile clothing accessories for both men and women.

I'm having a great time unpacking the new blouses from Blanc Nature. Lovely patterns coming out of that box...

P.S. The cardigan I am wearing is from Belgian designer Caroline Biss and currently my favourite piece of wardrobe!
