A New Direction for a New Year

Welcome to the new Petra Karthaus blog. In the past, we’ve used this space to
share pictures of our new lines and let customers know of any upcoming sales. We’ll still be doing that, but we’ve moved those kinds of announcements over to our social media channels:

  • We’ve just launched an Instagram page Instagram where we’ll regularly be showcasing our lines, many of which are exclusive to our store.
  • And you can follow us on Facebook where you can find great pictures, store info and occasional contests.

As for the blog, we’ll be using it to give you an inside look at what it takes to collect and curate the looks that make Petra Karthaus what it is, and why many  of our customers have been with us for over 25 years.

We find that we have these conversations fairly regularly. People come in to look around and make their way to the lounge in the back of the store where we answer their questions about everything from what a buying trip to Europe is like to how we choose which designers to showcase. It’s that extra attention that first-time visitors and long-time clients appreciate, and on this blog, our goal is to recreate that.

We’re just putting the finishing touches on our upcoming trip to Europe to get ready for fall/winter 2016, which we’ll be sharing highlights of in our next post. We’ll tell you about the shows we attend and any surprises we find along the way.

In the meantime, do come by for a visit to see what we have in stock for spring 2016. Below are a few of our favourites. And don't forget to check out the feature piece on the Manulife Centre blog about “The Heist,” the latest piece of art hanging in the store.

Until next time!

From Spain, con amor!

Aldo Martins is a brand designed and made in the mountain town of Igualada, just outside of the vibrant Catalan capital, Barcelona.

There, Marti Bisbal and his family have built a unique and fast growing business. Aldo Martins’ specialty: multi-coloured knitwear!

Each and every garment is a piece of art. The father, two sons and a daughter, each in charge of a key aspect of the business, make sure everything is done perfectly.

The whole process of creating their garments begins by translating the fabric designs into a computer software that is then sent to sophisticated knitting machines. They turn it into yards and yards of supple and soft material.

The fabrics are then cut and put together in a labour intensive process, all by hand. Pre-laundering and pressing ensure that every piece will maintain their quality after the first cleaning.

Each item is carefully checked for flaws, labeled, packaged and is ready to be sent anywhere in the world!

And, the best part: these handcrafted luxury garments, made in Spain, still come at a very affordable price!

Happy Wool Week!

At Petra Karthaus we have, from the alluring and unique boiled wool Geiger jackets, to the colourful and vibrant wool tops from Aldo Martins, and the chic designs from Garella and Bogner. Whichever you choose, you are sure to look elegant and make a smart decision!

WHY WOOL?

NATURAL: Wool is a protein fibre formed in the skin of sheep, and is thus one hundred percent natural, not man-made. Since the Stone Age, it has been appreciated as one of the most effective forms of all-weather protection known to man, and science has yet to produce a fibre which matches its unique properties.

RENEWABLE: As long as there is grass to graze on, every year sheep will produce a new fleece; making wool a renewable fibre source. Woolgrowers actively work to safeguard the environment and improve efficiency, endeavouring to make the wool industry sustainable for future generations.

BIODEGRADABLE: At the end of its useful life, wool can be returned to the soil, where it decomposes, releasing valuable nutrients into the ground. When a natural wool fibre is disposed of in soil, it takes a very short time to break down, whereas most synthetics are extremely slow to degrade.
